Artventure:
Painted as practice for my first Live Painting performance! Not quite sure where the inspiration was coming from, I just knew I wanted it to be a culture and hair on canvas piece!
Looking at this one as well as the live painting piece, they looked like fraternal twins but with faces that looked 'modi' which means 'rude or brazen' in creole. That reminded me of a Dominican saying we would say as kids when we were upset with our siblings, cousins or friends. One would say 'Leave me alone' and the other would rudely respond 'You born alone'. It's like shaming the person for wanting to be alone but also trying to make them feel like they have no friends , that they were born alone and will always be alone.
Many African cultures believed that all humans are born with a spiritual twin and that physical twins were a supernatural occurrence of that spiritual being becoming physical. So really, we all have a twin, and are never alone. Ironically, 'Leave Me Alone' is the twin sister of 'You Born Alone'
